My Journey as an Educator and the Importance of Wellbeing


As an educator, my experiences have taught me that prioritising my own wellbeing is essential not only for my personal health but also for the benefit of my students. Each day in the classroom presents unique challenges and rewards, but I have learned that I cannot effectively support my students if I do not first take care of myself.


The Impact of Self-Care on Teaching


In my early years as a teacher, I often put the needs of my students above my own. I believed that sacrificing my own wellbeing was part of the job. However, I quickly realised that this approach was unsustainable. When I neglect my own mental and physical health, I become less patient, less creative, and less effective in my teaching.


Making self-care a priority has transformed my teaching experience. I have found that when I engage in activities that promote my wellbeing, such as exercise, mindfulness practices, and spending time with loved ones, I am more energised and present in the classroom. This positivity not only enhances my own experience but also creates a more supportive environment for my students.



Creating a Balanced Routine


Establishing a balanced routine has been crucial in my journey. I have learned to set boundaries around my work hours and to carve out time for self-reflection and relaxation. Here are some strategies that have worked for me:


  • Mindfulness Practices: Incorporating mindfulness techniques into my daily routine has helped me manage stress and stay focused.


  • Physical Activity: Regular exercise boosts my mood and energy levels, allowing me to be more engaged with my students.


  • Professional Development: Continuously seeking opportunities for growth and learning keeps me motivated and inspired in my teaching practice.


  • Social Connections: Building relationships with fellow educators provides a support network that is invaluable during challenging times.


Modelling Wellbeing for Students


By prioritising my wellbeing, I also set an example for my students. I believe it is important for them to see that self-care is a vital part of life. When I openly discuss the importance of mental health and self-care practices, I encourage my students to value their own wellbeing. This creates a culture in the classroom where we can openly talk about our feelings and support one another.


Wellbeing is a necessity


My experiences as an educator have reinforced the idea that looking after myself is not a luxury but a necessity. By prioritising my wellbeing, I am better equipped to nurture and educate my students. Ultimately, when educators take care of themselves, they create a positive ripple effect that benefits the entire classroom community.



Wellbeing Is a Journey, Not a Destination


Some days will feel smooth, others challenging. That is normal. The key is to keep returning to what grounds you and your family. For me, living by the sea offers that grounding. The sound of waves, the fresh air, and the open space remind me to slow down and breathe.


Wellbeing in home education is about embracing imperfection and finding joy in the everyday moments. It is about building a supportive environment where children and families can thrive together.


Wellbeing is the foundation that makes home education sustainable and fulfilling. By focusing on calm, connection, and care, we create a space where learning happens naturally and joyfully. If you are on this journey, remember to be kind to yourself and seek out moments that bring you back to your centre. Your wellbeing matters just as much as your child’s.
